If economic uncertainty has made your material handling company reticent to hire new executives, salespeople and managers, then perhaps it’s time you took a fresh look at the available talent pool. There might not be a draft class this deep for many years.
That’s the message from Matt Ballema, president of Pioneer Search Group, an executive-search firm based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Early this year, the “professional and business services” sector, as classified by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, saw more layoff s than any other industry, with the “trade, transportation and utilities” sector coming in second.
“Now is the best time in this decade to invest in talent because you may run into people who would have never been on the market otherwise,” Ballema said. “Workers in their 40s and 50s – the ones with all the experience – are the hardest people to find nowadays, especially in the material handling industry.”
